Dr. Heidi Webber is a senior scientist at ZALF where she leads the Integrated Cropping System Analysis and Modelling working group. She studies cropping system adaptations to climate change using on-farm experimentation, biophysical models and integrated impact assessment methodologies. A particular research focus is to improve process based modelling tools to account for multiple stressors encountered in real production conditions (e.g. water scarcity, salinity, high temperatures). As postdoctoral researcher she worked on the WASCAL project in Burkina Faso, Benin and Ghana. Besides her coordination work, Dr. Heidi Webber will also give lectures during the summer school.
Dr. Omonlola Nadine Worou is the programme manager of ICRISAT's West and Central Africa Program in Bamako. She has worked as a researcher in both Europe and West Africa, using crop models to analyze climate impacts on agricultural systems and to explore climate change adaption and mitigation strategies in the context of West African small holder farms. Her work uses climate scenarios to predict agricultural projections, explores crop sensitivity to environmental variables, uses statistical and process-based methods to evaluate food production and looks at the interactions between agriculture and extreme events.
Sofia Hadir is an agricultural engineer, and currently pursuing her PhD Studies at the University of Bonn, where she is investigating the below ground interactions and dynamics in crop mixtures. The aim is to develop crop models for a large range of mixtures to simulate their impact on yield as well as on ecosystem services. During her Master thesis at the University of Bonn, she worked on assessing the sensitivity of crop models to soil data in the Sudan Savanna. Sofia Hadir is assisting the coordination of the CMRA 2021 international summer school.
Lecturers and instructors
Dr. Marc Corbeels is a systems agronomist with CIMMYT and has more than 15 years of experience working in the tropical regions of Africa and Brazil, with an emphasis on farming systems and agricultural production in smallholder agriculture. His current research focuses on ecological intensification options for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa in the context of climate variability and climate change. Dr. Marc Corbeels is associate editor of Field Crops Research journal.
Dr. Delphine Deryng is a climate policy analyst at the New Climate Institute based in Berlin, Germany since May 2020, focusing primarily on global climate actions in the agriculture and forestry sector. Dr. Deryng has written widely on climate change impacts and adaptation in the agriculture sector and possesses extensive experience in the development and use of global gridded crop modelling tools for global climate impacts assessments. She is the main developer of the global agroecosystem model PEGASUS since 2007 and coordinated the first global gridded crop model intercomparison initiative during 2012-2015, as part of the Agricultural Modelling Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP).
Dr. Folorunsho Akinseye is an agrometeorological scientist at ICRISAT (Kano) with over 9 years of experience in teaching and agricultural research. His research centers on evaluating the use of climate scenarios in agricultural projections, as well as using on-farm field and cropping system models for evaluating crop production under integrated fertility management, within the context of growing cereal and legume crops in semi-arid West Africa and the West African tropics. His current work contributes to the implementation of the Africa RISING program in Mali.
Dr. Babacar Faye is a postdoctoral researcher at IRD, France. He is an agronomist with expertise on climate change impacts assessment on crop yields and soil organic carbon. He has worked as a researcher in both Europe and West Africa, with a main focus on gridded simulations using process-based crop models. His current work focuses on identifying the limits and adaptation strategies of Sahelian cropping systems to climate change.
Dr. Ibrahima Hathie is an agricultural economist and the research director of IPAR Senegal. His research mainly centers on agricultural performance, youth employment, climate change and the Post 2015 development agenda. He also has extensive experience in consulting, where his focus has been on project and program reviews, project design, agricultural policy analysis, organizational development and strategic planning.
Prof. Jibrin M. Jibrin is a senior researcher and the Director of Africa Centre of Excellence in Dryland Agriculture at Bayero University, Kano Nigeria. He has over twenty-five years of teaching and research experience with focus on soil fertility and plant nutrition. His recent areas of research include the development of decision support tools for site-specific fertilizer recommendations, understanding and quantifying variabilities in yield responses to nutrients application, and integration of GIS tools with Crop Simulation models to understand spatial variabilities in crop yields.
Dr. Dilys MacCarthy is a senior researcher at the Soil and Irrigation Research Centre at the University of Ghana. She has 13 years working experience in Agricultural Research since completion of her PhD. Her central research areas of interest include ; integrated nutrient management and dynamics in farming systems, agricultural systems modelling/Impact of climate change on soil productivity and use of biochar as a soil amendment in cropping systems. Dr. Dilys MacCarthy is currently the leader of the West African team of scientists working with the Agricultural Models Inter-comparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) on the topic “Climate change impact on West African Agriculture: A Regional Assessment”.
Dr. Florent Noulèkoun is a research professor at the Department of Environmental Science and Ecological Engineering of Korea University. He has about 10 years of experience and an extensive publication record in the field of natural resources management in drylands. His research works has so far covered cross-cutting issues related to the sustainable management and conservation of forest and agroforest systems, combining conservation biology, biogeography, ecology, ethnobotany and ecological modelling. His current research focuses on the design of tree-based farming systems resilient to the ongoing climate variability and climate change in West African (semi-) arid areas.
Dr. Tommaso Stella is a postdoctoral researcher at ZALF. He is an agro-ecosystem modeler with expertise in model development and application across scales. He studied the influence of cropping systems on greenhouse gas emissions and soil organic carbon. His current work focuses on upscaling the impact of improved wheat traits to increase global yield potential.
Dr. Bouba Traore is a researcher with the Programme Cotton IER at the Wageningen University. His research area focuses on sustainable agriculture and climate change variability and adaption in the West African region.
Dr. Anthony Whitbread is the research programme director for Innovation Systems for the Drylands (ISD) project of ICRISAT, based in Hyderabad, India. He leads a team of researchers to develop strategies for managing climatic risk, soil fertility and identifies market led development opportunities across south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. He has published widely on the application of farming systems models, especially APSIM, to managing climate risk in rainfed commercial and smallholder farming systems. He also has 20 years of prior research experience focusing on crop-livestock systems in semi-arid Australia, Southeast Asia and southern Africa.
